INVESTIGATING MINERALS

Number: I.K. 017
Levels: Middle and Upper Elementary
Check-out time: 2 weeks

Description:

This kit supplies up to thirty-eight students, working in pairs, with samples of seven different minerals, streak plates, magnets and laminated study sheets. Students use a colorful sheet to learn about luster, cleavage, hardness, streak and other properties. Next, they use a flow chart that applies the properties to identify each of seven minerals. They complete a chart detailing all the properties of each mineral. Last, they use a matching game, “What’s the Use?” to learn about uses of the seven minerals.

Note to Teacher: This kit provides an excellent first-day introduction to the study of minerals, including their properties and uses. These activities are the same as those in the “Investigating Minerals” Fernbank 8th grade outreach program, which has visited the majority of DeKalb Middle Schools since 1999. At each school visited, all the kit contents listed below, except for the minerals and streak plates, were left with the host instructor. Also, a customized order form was provided to show the specimens that would need to be added to your school’s inventory to have the complete kit. Therefore, check your storage area to see if you already have this kit at your middle school.
