This Scarlet Kingsnake is a mimic of the Eastern Coral Snake which also occurs throughout the same range. However there are some distinguishing characteristics that separate them. The Scarlet Kingsnake always has a red snout with the yellow rings being separated from the red rings by black. In the Coral Snake, the snout is black and the yellow and red rings touch. A rhyme makes it easy to remember "Red touching black is a friend to Jack, Red touching yellow kills a fellow"
