Joyce is an Atlanta native, educated in the Atlanta Public School System and graduate of Frederick Douglass High School. After completing her BS degree in Science Education with an emphasis in Elementary and Middle School Science from Georgia State University, she began her career in the DeKalb County School System as a science and gifted education teacher before joining the staff at Fernbank Science Center. Later she earned her M. ED and Leadership certification also from Georgia State University. With a passion for STEM Education, after being assigned as Coordinator at Fernbank Science Center she works closely with NASA, coordinating the NASA Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy (SEMAA) Project and facilitates STEM programming through special events and learning opportunities for students, teachers, parents and the community.
EXPERIENCES AND ACHEIVEMENTS
- Developed original curriculum and instructed in the Kittredge Board Scholars Program, the Howard Hughes Summer Science Institute at Fernbank Museum of Natural History, National SEMAA, Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aeronautics Academy, and the Learning by Design curriculum program at Georgia Institute of Technology.
- Certified at Lawrence Hall of Science as a GEMS Associate and at the Georgia Regional Board of Mental Health in Drug Addiction and Prevention.
- Wrote and received grant from DeKalb Board of Health to create resources for primary teachers to use in classrooms on the subject of child abuse.
- Member of Targeted Assistance Team for Elementary Science and DeKalb Advisory Council for the Prevention/ Intervention Program for DeKalb Schools.
- Meritorious Teacher Award, 2006 Teacher of the Year from Fernbank Science Center.
- Graduate of the Citizens Police Academy of Decatur.
- Member Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Delta Pi
