An anemometer detects wind speed. Anemometers are easy to use. Simply point the instrument into the wind. For example if the wind is coming from the south then point the anemometer south into the wind to detect the wind speed. Wind speeds of 5 mph or greater are easy to detect, lighter wind speeds may go undetected.

There are several types of anemometers. For student use a basic hand-held model is recommended. If no wind is observed this is recorded as “calm” wind.
